The Three Marks of Existence are fundamental concepts that describe the nature of reality and human experience. They are:
Impermanence (Anicca): This signifies that all things, both physical and mental, are constantly changing and in a state of flux. Nothing remains static; everything is subject to decay and transformation. Attachment to things or experiences is unsatisfactory.
Suffering (Dukkha): Life is marked by dissatisfaction, discomfort, or suffering. This can manifest as physical or emotional pain, or even a sense of unease or discontent. This refers to the inherent unsatisfactoriness that is part of existence. The dissatisfaction that arises from attachment to impermanent things and the desire for lasting happiness in a constantly changing world.
No Self (Anatta): Our sense of identity is constantly shifting. The concept of a permanent, unchanging self is an illusion. What we perceive as a self is actually a collection of ever-changing physical and mental phenomena. There is no core, unchanging self.
These Three Marks of Existence are considered essential to understanding the nature of reality and achieving liberation from suffering. By recognizing and accepting these truths, individuals can cultivate wisdom, compassion, mindfulness, and can lessen attachment and aversion, ultimately leading to a reduction of suffering.
